Next Flower Walk: June 23 @ 10am, location to be determined.
Ahoy fellow vagabond,
We do this once a month! So if not this time, maybe next time.
Join us to identify some of the flowers that emerge out of the melting ground as summer approaches. Let’s investigate their home environments and factor in climate to get a good idea of where these flowers grow and why! What else is growing by them? Also, come are share what you have learned and found out!
We will have the opportunity to learn about and harvest plenty of wild foods later in the season, however it is particularly hard to scavenge for growing plants, early season, in the high country (above 9,000 feet). The land doesn't have a lot to offer this time of year. The ground may still have snow on it in the shady places or where the wind has built up layers of dense snow pack. It may still freeze at night even though it can be 65 degrees during the warmest part of the day. Plus, the animals that live in the high country typically get to the edible plants before we can! These flower walks are a great way to introduce yourself to the plants of this area that grow above 9,000 feet and are an excellent way to brush up on or share about your flower knowledge. Plus, since V.O.C. has a heavy influence on outdoor survival skills, you’d be adding to your resilience tool bag too. We will have a flower walk every month until there are no flowers and each walk we will try and identify as many as possible, exploring for edible and medicinal plants as well. Bring your plant books!!
